20th death anniversary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan being observed today
LAHORE (92 News) – The 20th death anniversary of the legendary singer and qawwali maestro Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is being observed on Wednesday.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born in Faisalabad on 13th October 1948. The great singer and musician died at the age of 48 on 16th August 1997.
The government of Pakistan bestowed Pride of Performance on the legendary singer in 1987 for his contribution to Pakistani music.
He was also honored with the prestigious UNESCO Music Prize. The music maestro released as many as 25 Qawwali albums.
His massive hit Dam Mast Qalandar became household anthems.
The legendary singer was not only popular in Pakistan but also in rest of the world. He sang predominantly in the Islamic devotional style known as Qawwali.
Nusrat Fateh’s songs are still alive among his fans and also youngsters, and have defined the art-form of Qawwali for the generations to come.
Nusrat became renowned for his songs of religious devotion in Urdu, lengthy performances that build in emotion and complexity to the backdrop of stringed instruments and the harmonium in a distinctive style known as qawwali.
