13 killed in Chitral avalanche

CHITRAL (92 News) – At least 13 people were killed when an avalanche hit Sher Shal village in Garam Chashma Tehsil, destroying at least 25 houses. The victims comprised six women, six children and two men, while 11 people were rescued and evacuated. Rescue operation is in progress to recover the people trapped under the debris, while the injured people are being shifted to hospital for medical assistance. Meanwhile, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has activated National Emergency Operations Center since this morning for coordinating rescue and relief efforts in avalanche hit area of Chitral. The Authority is coordinating for provision of helicopter service for rescue and relief operation. NDMA has also asked National Highway Authority to fully mobilize its machinery on all critical sections for road clearance.
