Death toll rises to 24 as marble mine collapses in Mohmand

PESHAWAR (92 News) – The death toll in marble mine collapse in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Mohmand district has reached to 24 after two more bodies were recovered from under the debris on Tuesday. According to the details garnered, eight injured are being treated in hospital. The rescue operation is still underway. It has been learn that more than 50 people are feared trapped under the debris, adding that rescue operation has been started after it was stopped due to darkness at around 2am. Heavy machinery and manpower were dispatched to the area for assistance in the rescue operation. It is worth mentioning here that dozens of labourers were mining marble when a heavy rock tumbled down on them. Majority of workers are still missing, while the teams are facing difficulties in carrying out relief activities. Earlier on Monday, as many as 14 workers were killed and several others injured when a marble mine collapsed in Safi, Mohmand. Rescuers have so far recovered eight bodies and seven injured workers. The Pak Army, Rescue and other agencies are continuing an operation to recover the trapped people. Rescuers are facing difficulties in the operation due to darkness. Mohmand Deputy Commissioner Iftikhar Alam feared that 50 people might have been killed in the mishap.
