Abid Malhi tracked through brother-in-law’s cell phone

LAHORE (92 News) - The main accused in the Lahore motorway gang-rape case Abid Malhi was tracked with the help of his brother-in-law’s cell phone.

In a media briefing on Tuesday, Punjab Inspector General Inam Ghani said that the main accused had been moving from one place to another to escape from the police.

The IG Punjab revealed how the Punjab police arrested Abid Malhi 33 days after the crime was committed. He had raped and then robbed a woman in front of her children on the Lahore motorway on September 9. He was arrested from Faisalabad Monday night.

According to the police, the suspect had immediately gone to his home after the crime. “Malhi had seen himself on television. Following this, he kept changing his location,” IG Ghani said, adding that he visited Bahawalnagar’s Fort Abbas, Manga Mandi, Chiniot, and Faisalabad during this time. His accomplice, Iqbal alias Bala, kept him updated.

“Earlier this week, Malhi had called his family using his brother-in-law’s cell phone which the police tracked. When he came back to his house, the police were waiting for him,” IG Ghani added.

Usman Buzdar announces reward for police

Punjab CM Usman Buzdar has announced a Rs five million reward for the provincial police chief and his team for arresting Abid Malhi, the prime suspect in the motorway rape case.

He felicitated IG Punjab police Inam Ghani and the investigation team on tracing the suspect. Abid Malhi was arrested in Faisalabad on Monday after being on the run for over a month.

The main suspect in the Lahore motorway rape case, Abid Malhi, was arrested after 33 days on Monday.

Abid Malhi was arrested by the security officers through scientific method from Manga Mandi on October 12, 2020 in joint operation of CIA and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) after 33 days. Security personnel told that geo-fencing, DNA sampling, profiling and other such procedures were used to arrest the culprit.

The police arrested Abid Malhi, the main culprit of the Motorway rape case, from the house of his father in Manga Mandi on Monday. He has been shifted to Lahore for interrogation.

Punjab Minister Information Fayyazul Hassan Chohan and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill have confirmed the arrest of Abid Malhi.

Fayyazul Hassan Chohan said that Abid Malhi had been interrogated and he would be presented in court soon. "The accused will be punished according to the law," he added.

On September 9, two dacoits identified as Abid and Shafqat had gang-raped a woman in front of her children in the Gujjarpura police area on Lahore-Sialkot Motorway.

The victim with her children was waiting for help on Motorway when the dacoits reached there. They forcibly took her to nearby jungle and raped her. The incident caused uproar across the country. Shafqat had already been arrested and is on judicial remand.
