Another polio case reported in Lahore
May 2, 2019
LAHORE (92 News) – Another polio case has been confirmed in Lahore as polio virus diagnosed in a 10-year-old child for the first time in history of Punjab. The spokesperson confirmed that a 10-year-old child in Lahore’s Allama Iqbal Town has been diagnosed with polio. He also said that this is the second case reported in the province this year. Nine cases have been reported across the country. “Samples were collected on April 2 and sent to Islamabad for confirmation. The virus belongs to an Outfall Pumping Station in Lahore,” an official at polio laboratory of the National Institute of Health said. Efforts to eliminate polio in Pakistan have became complicated in recent years, as polio workers have faced attacks by militants who say the health teams are Western spies, or that the vaccines they administer are intended to sterilise children.
Man behind ‘Peshawar polio drama’ arrested
Earlier on April 23, the police arrested key person, behind the defamation of anti-polio drive in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa. In an immediate action against the perpetrators, the police nabbed Mohammad today.
However, the court granted physical remand of conspirator, who did drama against vaccine, to police for one-day. Yesterday late night, the conspiracy against the campaign in Peshawar was exposed when a video of a man named Nazar Mohammad surfaced on the social media. The spokesman of polio eradication in Pakistan, Babar Atta, said in a tweet that police have lodged an “FIR against 12 individuals who were behind the Peshawar Drama.” In the video, a man could be seen employing children to prove that vaccines were defected. He administers children polio drops, following which the children are asked to pretend to be fainted. He can be heard asking the children to lie down on the stretcher, following which all the children, standing on their feet till moments ago, start falling on the hospital bed. When one of the children raises his head, he is again told by the man in the video to keep his head down and pretend. The children otherwise seem to be totally fine in the video.
