Apex court tasks NAB to bring back Husain Haqqani

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Supreme Court on Thursday tasked the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to bring back former ambassador to US Husain Haqqani to Pakistan. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nasir heard the Memogate scandal. During the hearing, the chief justice ordered to make legislation for bringing back to the accused from foreign countries within a month. The top judge ordered to the NAB for taking action against Husain Haqqani. He remarked that the NAB to bring back accused of Memogate scandal Husain Haqqani. CJ Nisar said that the government can seek help from United Nations Convention against Corruption for bringing back the accused to Pakistan. He mentioned that the case has to conclude but without return of Husain Haqqani, the case could not be decided. The CJP said that Husain Haqqani submitted the affidavit to return back in the country. He also said that there is need to legislation, which will be approved from the parliament, for bringing back to all accused who are in the foreign countries. The judicial assistance informed the court that the NAB has authority of documentation with law assistance. The NAB can directly contact with the State Department of US while It can seek help from the United Nations Convention against Corruption regarding this matter. During the hearing, Barrister Zafarullah informed the court that the FIA registered a fake case against Hussain Haqqani. He also said that Haqqani's crime was not clearly mentioned in the FIR. He added that the government wasted six years on the return of Husain Haqqani. The apex court ordered to NAB for taking action against Haqqani and adjourned the hearing till on Monday. The Memogate scandal erupted in 2011 when Pakistani-American businessman Mansoor Ijaz claimed to have received an 'anti-army' memo from Haqqani, then the Pakistani envoy in Washington DC, for US joint chiefs chairman Admiral Mike Mullen. The memo sent by Haqqani in 2011 allegedly mentioned a possible army coup in Pakistan following the US raid in Abbottabad to kill Osama bin Laden. It sought assistance from the US for the then-Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) government for 'reigning in the military and intelligence agencies'.
