Army chief leaves for Kabul to meet Afghan president

RAWALPINDI (92 News) – Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Tuesday left for Kabul to meet Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. In a tweet, Director General of ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor said that Pakistan wishes to see national unity government and the US succeeding to bring peace in Afghanistan. The invitation was extended by the Afghan president, ISPR said.

"Pakistan wishes to see [the] National Unity Government and US/ NATO succeeding to bring peace in Afghanistan," the military's spokesperson wrote on twitter. Pakistan had reiterated its support for recent peace initiatives in Afghanistan on Saturday, after the Afghan government and the Taliban agreed on a ceasefire during Eid-ul-Fitr. "Pakistan wishes to reiterate its support of recent peace initiatives in Afghanistan," a spokesman for the Pakistani Foreign Office had said in a statement. "We particularly support all Afghan-owned and Afghan-led efforts aimed at bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan." The spokesman had further said: "We also wish our Afghan brothers and sisters a peaceful and blessed month of Ramazan and a happy Eid." Earlier, the United Stated has asked Pakistan to help in Afghan-Taliban peace talks and assistance in peace process in Afghanistan. "We have asked for Pakistan’s assistance in facilitating a peace process and we have sought to understand Pakistan’s own core security concerns and ensure that its interests are taken into account in any peace process,” she said while speaking at the US Institute of Peace.
