Asma Rani murder case: Main accused sentenced to death

PESHAWAR (92 News) - A Peshawar district and sessions court has sentenced the main accused in the Asma Rani murder case to death on Friday.

Mujahidullah Afridi, the main accused who murdered a third-year medical student Asma Rani due to the refusal of marriage proposal, was sentenced to death. Siddiqullah and Shahzeb, the other accused in the medical student murder case, has been acquitted.

The verdict of the murder case of Asma Rani was announced three years later in Central Jail Peshawar. Sessions Judge Peshawar Ashfaq Taj sentenced Afridi to death. Mujahidullah was also ordered to pay two million rupees compensation and Rs300,000 fine. The court acquitted the other two accused Siddiqullah and Shahzeb in the case.

Asma Rani, a third-year medical student, was shot dead in Kohat in January 2018 for refusing a marriage proposal. She was taken to a nearby hospital after being shot thrice. In a video statement, the MBBS student had identified Mujahidullah Afridi as the assailant before succumbing to her wounds. The clip had sent shock waves after being gone viral on social media.

Afridi fled the country but he was arrested from Dubai in March 2018 with the help of Interpol. The case was shifted to Peshawar from Kohat due to security concerns.

Police had registered an FIR of the case on the complaint of brother of the deceased, Muhammad Irfan, under Section 324 and 304 of Pakistan Penal Code.
