October 10, 2019
LAHORE (92 News) – An accountability court has allowed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to interrogate Nawaz Sharif in jail. Sources said that the NAB had submitted an application in court seeking permission to investigate Nawaz Sharif in jail. On August 23, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had included incarcerated former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. The corruption watchdog body had reportedly traced numerous telegraphic transfers (TTs) from foreign countries to Nawaz Sharif’s account. It was also reported that the NAB sent a questionnaire to Nawaz Sharif in Kot Lakhpat Jail and sought asset details of the former prime minister. The sources further added that Kot Lakhpat Jail’s superintendent handed over the questionnaire to Nawaz Sharif in the prison. On August 8, the NAB has arrested Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. She was detained prior to meeting her father former prime minister Nawaz Sharif at the Kot Lakhpat Jail. Maryam excused from appearing before the bureau despite summon and denied from appearance for investigation. It was also reported that Yousaf Abbas, the nephew of Nawaz Sharif, also detained by the anti-graft watchdog body. In the last appearance before the NAB, Maryam had failed to satisfy the National Accountability Bureau and tried to lead the inquiry officials astray with unneeded information and no clarity in the answers she provided. On July 31 during appearance, the NAB Lahore interrogated Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz in the alleged money laundering case. The PML-N leader appeared before the anti-graft watchdog body in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. The NAB officials interrogated Maryam for transferring millions of rupees to abroad. Maryam Nawaz could not satisfy corruption watchdog body over interrogation. However, the NAB gave the PML-N leader a questionnaire and summoned her again on August 8. The evidence against the owners of the sugar mills came to the fore during the investigation against Shehbaz Sharif and his sons Hamza and Salman in money laundering and income beyond means case.
