CJP says life sentence means life imprisonment, not 25-year jail
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Asif Saeed Khosa on Monday has explained that the life sentence does not imply a 25-year imprisonment, instead it means life imprisonment.
The chief justice said while hearing the review petition of a death sentence in a murder case. Justice Khosa remarked that he would further explain the meaning of life sentence at an appropriate time.
“After that, convicts will prefer a death sentence instead of life imprisonment. If this is the case, then we would see who commits murder,” he said,” while referring to judicial practice in India that there life sentences are given with period of imprisonment.
CJP Asif Saeed Khosa calls for a system for monitoring all courts
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Asif Saeed Khosa has stressed the need for a system to monitor all courts.
Addressing a ceremony on Saturday, he said that it was responsibility of the state to ensure attendance of the accused in courts.
He said that the judges are doing more work than judges across the country. “We cannot ask judges to do more. Unfortunately, the Justice Department is not in the priorities of the parliament. Recommendations and amendments have not been presented in the parliament for improving the Judicial Policy,” he said.
The CJP said that the achievement of justice will be easy by fixing the time of courts. “The police should present the challan of the case immediately after conducting investigations,” he said.
He said that the steps are being taken to end the delay in cases. “There is need to remove hurdles in the appearance of prisoners in courts,” he said.
The CJP said that the inheritance matters should be resolved in the NADRA office instead of courts. “It is also responsibility of the state to formulate the laws and implement them,” he remarked.
He said that the opinion of the Attorney General is also sought to remove the confusion in the law.
