LAHORE (92 News) – Hundreds of lawyers in business suits on Monday staged a protest at The Mall and break a security cordon and enter a courtroom at the Lahore High Court after non-bailable arrest warrants were issued for Multan Bar President Sher Zaman in contempt of court case today.
The lawyers resorted to violence and protest after the court issued non-bailable arrest warrants for LHCBA Multan president Sher Zaman. A group of lawyers damaged public property, broke the gates of the entrance of the Lahore High Court (LHC).
The bench also ordered the suspension of the lawyers’ licenses.
Police fired tear gas and water cannon on protesting lawyers after the lawyers threw stones at law enforcement personnel, dislodged an iron-grill gate inside the court and chanted slogans inside the court premises.
The protesters demand the court to take back its orders for the arrest of Sher Zaman Qureshi. Dozens of people were hurt, witnesses said.
In July, Sher Zaman and others had allegedly misbehaved with Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan and obstructed judicial proceedings of his court at the Multan bench.
After the incident, the Lahore High Court chief justice withdrew judges from the Multan Bench of the Lahore High Court while exercising his constitutional powers in this regard. However, the LHC principal seat and Bahawalpur Bench were made available for dispensation of justice.
Later, LHC CJ Syed Mansoor Ali Shah restored functioning of Multan Bench, which was withdrawn earlier over lawyers’ misbehavior with a judge.
