COAS, US envoy Khalilzad discuss Afghan peace process
RAWALPINDI (92 News) – The US delegation headed by Special Representative for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad, Commander Resolute Support Mission General Austin Scott Miller met Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Bajwa at the GHQ.
According to the statement of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday, the regional security environment and Afghan peace and reconciliation process discussed during the meeting.
The ISPR stated that the US delegation appreciated Pakistan’s resolve towards Afghan peace process for bringing peace and stability in the region.
On the occasion, the COAS reiterated that peace in Afghanistan is important for Pakistan and assured continued efforts for enduring peace and stability in the region, the ISPR said.
The meeting was attended by, Deputy Assistant to US President Ms Lisa Curtis and the senior director for South and Central Asia and US charge d’ affairs to Pakistan were also present.
Earlier, Zalmay Khalilzad had called on Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and discussed progress on the Afghan peace process at the Foreign Office in Islamabad.
Both the sides agreed that ultimately the intra-Afghan dialogue would be vital to agree upon the contours of a future Afghan policy so that the country becomes stable and prosperous and at peace with its neighbors.
On the other hand, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani phoned Prime Minister Imran Khan and expressed his satisfaction over Pakistan’s role for peace in Afghanistan. They also discussed the matter pertaining to border security.
Both leaders discussed the recent efforts for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.
President Ghani expressed his gratitude for Pakistan’s sincere facilitation of these efforts, initiated by the US Special Representative for Peace and Reconciliation in Afghanistan Zamlay Khalilzad.
Prime Minister Imran Khan assured President Ghani that Pakistan was making sincere efforts for a negotiated settlement of the conflict in Afghanistan through an inclusive peace process as part of shared responsibility.
