JAMRUD (92 News) A policeman, escorting a polio team, was martyred Monday in firing by unidentified gunmen in the Jamrud area of Khyber district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
The incident took place near Ghundi, where the gunmen fired shots at the policemen escorting the polio team.
As a result, policeman Abdul Khaliq was martyred while the others narrowly escaped the attack.
The gunmen, riding motorcycles, fled the scene. The police recovered two 30-bore bullet shells from the crime scene.
The incident led to the suspension of the polio vaccination drive in the area. However, authorities vowed to continue the drive despite these threats.
It is worth mentioning here that a seven-day national vaccination drive began on Monday, aiming to vaccinate 44.2 million children under the age of five against polio.
As many as 945 polio teams are participating in the drive in the Khyber district alone. The drive was launched under the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to eradicate poliovirus in the country.
It is to be noted here that the incident highlights security risks for polio workers and the police personnel escorting them, with over 200 deaths since the 1990s.
