Curfew, communication blockade continues in IoK on 85th day
October 28, 2019
SRINAGAR (92 News) – Curfew, communication blockade continued in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IoK) on 85th day, on Monday, as normal life crippled due to the unrelenting military lockdown. According to the KMS, restrictions under section 144 remain enforced. Internet across all platforms and prepaid cellular services continue to remain shut. However, landline connections are functioning and voice calls on postpaid mobile phones are allowed. People are resisting Indian attempts to show some signs of normalcy returning in the territory. An informal but widespread civil disobedience movement continues to remain in effect across the Kashmir Valley. The move is aimed at protesting against Indian occupation and its Aug 5 unilateral action. As part of this movement, shopkeepers keep their shops shut for most part of the day, students stay away from educational institutions, govt and private sector workers prefer to remain at homes and public transport is hardly seen on the roads. The IoK authorities barred people from participating in the night-long prayers at the shrine of Chrar-e-Sharief in Kashmir due to curfew. Police had sealed the area a day before the Urs celebrations commenced. This happened despite the authorities’ claims that normalcy has returned to the Kashmir Valley.
UN rights experts concerned about Kashmir
On the other hand, human rights experts at the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) are concerned about the Kashmir situation, according to Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard. To a question at a news conference at the UN she said, “The situation in Kashmir is a big concern for many of us within Special Procedures. But it is also a situation where we need to recognise that besides keeping the issue on the agenda, and besides denouncing the violation I am not sure that we at this point can be asked to have much more impact than that.” “It doesn’t meant that we are giving up at all but it does mean that there are a number of actors that are probably better placed than Special Procedures to move the issue to a better situation,” she added. Special Procedures of the OHCHR is the official name for its group of independent human rights experts with mandates over specific topics or areas.
