Cyclone Tauktae will not make landfall on Pakistan's coastal belt: PDM

KARACHI (92 News) - Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has confirmed that Cyclone Tauktae will not make a landfall on the coastal belt of Pakistan.

The PMD said that Cyclone Tauktae will pass by Pakistan's coastal belt without touching it.

PMD's Director Sardar Sarfaraz said the cyclone will pass by without touching the coastal belt of the country. "The cyclone is turning away to the southwest direction," he added.

The spokesperson stated that the storm is 1210 km southeast of Karachi, however, the cyclone will have an impact in the form of rains with strong winds in the districts of Thatta, Tharparkar, Badin, Mirpur Khas and Umer Kot. He said the rains will be of moderate level.

Sarfaraz said strong, dusty winds are blowing in Karachi due to the cyclone, adding that the speed of winds are likely to reach the speed of 25-30km/hr in the metropolis.

He said the cyclone is also causing warm winds to blow in the city, adding that this will raise the temperature of the city. "The temperature of the city is expected to rise to a maximum of 41-43 degrees centigrade in the next couple of days," added Sarfaraz. 

 Earlier, the Sindh government has declared emergency in all the districts located along the coastal belt for taking precautionary measures to meet any untoward situation in view of Cyclone in the Arabian Sea.

The decision was taken in an emergency meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in Karachi.

The Chief Minister directed the Karachi administration to start clearing all the choking points of drains.

He also directed to start removing all the billboards and ask the builders to take precautionary measures for security of their under-construction buildings.

The Chief Minister further directed Provincial Disaster Management Authority to provide dewatering machines, generators to the district administration in the city and in the other districts across the province on need basis.

The meeting also advised fishermen not to go into the deep sea for fishing from today (Sunday).
