LAHORE (Web Desk) Around 200 Israeli soldiers signed a letter to refuse to fight in Gaza, citing the immense loss of Palestinian lives and widespread destruction, which has left them psychologically distressed.
According to Israeli media, the Israeli soldiers state in the letter that they will stop fighting if the government does not ensure a ceasefire.
Describing various operations during the 15-month-long Gaza war as immoral, some soldiers have also testified to the deaths of innocent Palestinians and the destruction of homes.
The Israeli army has, however, strongly denied the allegations, adding that those who have refused to fight can be jailed.
Earlier this month, an Israeli military spokesman admitted in a statement that thousands of Israeli soldiers had withdrawn from combat duties due to psychological stress.
Israeli media also reported an increase in suicide rate and mental stress within the Israeli army, stating that in 2024, 21 soldiers committed suicide, while 17 soldiers died by suicide in 2023.
Israeli military authorities say that suicide has become the second leading cause of death among soldiers since 2011.
Last year, 12 reservists, seven conscripts, and two career soldiers died by suicide, while 807 soldiers were killed in operations against Palestinians over the past two years.
It should be noted here that under Israeli law, all citizens must serve two years in the military, and in wartime, they are required to fight. Refusing to fight in the war can result in imprisonment.
