Elections for National, Provincial Assemblies will be held on February 8, 2024: ECP

ISLAMABAD (92 News) - The elections for the National and Provincial Assemblies will be held on February 8, said the notification regarding fixing the date of the elections presented by Attorney General Usman Anwar to the Supreme Court.

According to the written order of the conduct of the elections within 90 days issued by the SC on Friday, the country was concerned about the delay in the elections date. "Implementation of the constitution is not an option, but a responsibility. President Arif Alvi did not approach the court under the Article 186," it ruled.

The order says that results will be serious if any institution interferes with constitutional limit of another institution. "The court has no power to fix the elections date," it added.

The order said that the assembly cannot be dissolved in the wake of the no-trust motion. "President Arif Alvi dissolved the assembly when the prime minister was facing the no-trust motion. The higher the constitutional position, the greater the responsibility," it added.

The order stated that the President, the Chief Election Commissioner and members are bound to the oath. "The dispute between the President and the Election Commission of Pakistan was unnecessarily taken to the Supreme Court. It is high time that courts should not be part of such disputes unnecessarily," it ruled.

Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa remarked that the court will decide the matter at some another time as who is empowered to give the elections date.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially announced that the general elections for the National and four Provincial Assemblies will take place on February 8, 2024.

“In light of the Supreme Court’s orders from constitutional petitions numbered 32 and 36, of 2023 .. and after a subsequent meeting with the President of Pakistan, a notification has been issued here to confirm the date,” said the notification.
