ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The federal government has approved a new summary granting extension in the tenure of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa. The cabinet granted the approval unanimously during a meeting. The summary will be sent to President Dr Arif Alvi for approval. The cabinet also approved amendment to the Act pertaining to extension. The meeting also discussed the verdict of the Supreme Court. Talking to the media after the cabinet meeting, Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said that under Article 243, Prime Minister Imran Khan has the power to advise the President to extend the service tenure of the Army Chief and the same procedure was followed in the matter. “India tried to attack Pakistan and imposed curfew in the Occupied Kashmir. It can also carry out a Pulwama-like attack. Owing to unusual circumstances in the region, the prime minister wants continuity of the command of COAS Qamar Javed Bajwa,” he added. He said that the cabinet had amended Section 255 of the Army Regulation. “General Kayani was granted the extension under Section 255 of the Army Regulation. The amendment has been made to assist the court and clear the issues. Under the amendment, the word ‘extension’ has been added to the Defence Act,” he said. Shafqat Mahmood said that a new summary would be moved after cancelling the old one.
