The NAB claims that Shehbaz Sharif, being chief minister of Punjab, had issued a directive for the construction of a drain in Chiniot district primarily to benefit the sugar mills owned by his sons. It said Rs200 million was spent for this purpose from public money.
Ramazan Sugar Mills reference filed against Shehbaz, Hamza
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has already filed Ramazan Sugar Mills reference against Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz. It is worth mention here that the Ramzan Sugar Mills reference was filed for causing loss of rupees 213 million to the national exchequer. In the reference, it alleged that as former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz had misused his authority by constructing a 25 kilometers of drain to facilitate Ramzan Sugar mills under pretext of people well-being. An inquiry that was carried out in the month of July last year, proved that Shehbaz abused his powers to benefit his family members, NAB said and added, “We have subsequent evidence against the duo of father and son.” On February 2, following the completion of investigation into Ramzan Sugar Mills scam, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore, had decided to nominate Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz as main accused in the scandal. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Director General (DG) NAB Lahore, Shehzad Saleem, and sought an approval from the Bureau’s headquarters for filing reference against them.
LHC orders to release Shehbaz Sharif in Ramazan Sugar Mills
Earlier on Feb 14, the Lahore High Court (LHC) granted bail to Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif in the Ashiyana Housing Scheme and Ramazan Sugar Mills cases.
The court ordered to release him after furnishing two surety bonds worth Rs one million. The two-member bench headed by Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmed announced the verdict that was reserved earlier. The court rejected the bail plea of Fawad Hassan Fawad in assets beyond known sources of income case. However, he was granted bail in the Ashiyana Housing scandal. The court remarked that Shehbaz Sharif is not the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Ramazan Sugar Mills.
