First death anniversary of Junaid Jamshed observed

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The first death anniversary of renowned singer turned Naat Khawan and religious preacher Junaid Jamshed was observed on Thursday. He died in a plane crash while returning to Islamabad from Chitral last year. Junaid Jamshed, a Pakistani pop star turned evangelical Muslim cleric, was on board an aircraft that crashed into a mountainside in Havelian. Jamshed rocketed to fame in Pakistan in the 1980s and 1990s as the singer for the Vital Signs rock group, and later launched a solo career, with a string of chart-topping albums and hits. The widely-admired singer never actually intended to opt for a career in music and tried his hand in the Pakistan Air Force as an F-16 fighter pilot. His name appeared on a passenger manifest for Pakistan International Airlines' (PIA) flight PK661, which crashed near the northern town of Havelian. Jamshed retired from music in 2001 and announced that he was devoting his life to Islam, joining the Tableeghi Jamaat religious organization.
