Food crisis hits Syria after fall of Assad regime
DAMASCUS (Web Desk) The situation in Syria after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime has led to food shortages in major cities, and the prices of essential commodities have also increased manifold.
According to the United Nations Humanitarian Organisation, food shortages have occurred in Damascus, Deir ez-Zur, Hama, and major cities since the fall of the Assad regime.
Between November 27 and December 9, the price of bread in Idlib and Aleppo increased by 900 percent, while the price of chicken increased by 119 percent.
Food distribution and access to basic necessities are severely affected in Qunaitra, Manbij, and Deir ez-Zur. At least 6,000 families in Tabqa are in urgent need of food.
Extreme fluctuations in the exchange rate have also led to economic instability, as a result of which shops are closed and traders are hoarding goods.
On the other hand, a foreign news agency reports that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Turkey on Friday, where he will hold a meeting with his Turkish counterpart during which he is expected to discuss the situation in Syria.
Earlier, news had emerged that the Biden administration contacted Hayat Tahrir, the rebel group that overthrew the Bashar al-Assad government, and urged the establishment of an inclusive government in Syria.
