Fourth spell of monsoon: Heavy rain with thunderstorms engulf Karachi

KARACHI (92 News) – The fourth spell of monsoon as sudden rain and scattered thunderstorms took over Karachi on Thursday. According to the reports, heavy downpour lashed different areas of Karachi, inundating streets and leaving a major part of the port city without power and 600 feeders tripped due to rain. The rain has hindered the flow of traffic as raods submerged in rainwater in many areas of the city, including Shahrahe Faisal, Drigh Road, Natha Khan. Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded 28 mm of rain in Saddar, 20mm in Shah Faisal Colony, 11mm in Gulistan-e-Johar and 9mm in Nazimabad. Rescue sources said that a man died of electrocution in Gulistan-e-Johar. Meanwhile, light rain has been recorded in Gulshan-e-Maymar, Gulberg and their adjoining areas. Met office has predicted that the spell will continue till Saturday. Spell to continue till August 8 Heavy rain was reported in different parts of Karachi Thursday afternoon in the fourth spell of the monsoon season. According to the Met department, Karachi is expected to receive between 100 and 200 millimetres of rain. An alert for urban flooding has been issued. The last time it rained Karachi’s streets were flooded, with some neighbourhoods reporting chest high water. To solve the issue, Prime Minister Imran Khan asked the Pakistan Army to clear drains in the city. Rain emergency imposed in several districts of Sindh Amid the sweltering heatwave in most parts of the country, the Met department has forecast a heavy spell of rain in Sindh and Balochistan from today till Saturday due to which rain emergency has been declared in many districts of Sindh. On the other hand, NDMA has cleaned 80 per cent Gujjar nullah, 85 percent Korangi nullah and Mowach Goth nuklla by 75 percent so far. Meanwhile, Karachi people are facing electricity load shedding due to tripping of two units at Bin Qasim Power Plant.
