Glacial lake outburst: Discharge of water decreases in Hunza

HUNZA (92 News) – The discharge of water from the lake formed by Shashpar Glacier in Hunza has decreased.

As per details, the outburst of glacial lake caused one bridge destroyed, two powerhouses, water channels broken and drinking pipes also affected.

Yesterday, the district administration compiled a preliminary report of the devastation caused by the discharge of water, according to which, the agricultural and drinking water system in Hassanabad Bridge, Aliabad city and Hassanabad village on Karakoram Highway was completely destroyed.

Two power plants have also been affected. The local population has been evacuated from 22 houses in Sherabad village and these houses have been evacuated. The floodwater also partially damaged a classroom.

On the other hand, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Kashmir Affairs Qamar Zaman Kaira contacted the Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan and directed him to provide immediate relief to the people by utilizing all government resources. He also directed to restore ground communication and normalcy of life.

Besides this, Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan Mohiyuddin Ahmad Wani also visited the affected area and assured full assistance to the victims, including rehabilitation of the highway.

The district administration said that a temporary bridge would be constructed after complete discharge of water from the lake.
