LAHORE (92 News) – After strictly ban of plastic bags in Lahore Cantonment, the Punjab government has decided to ban plastic bags across Punjab. According to the sources, the bill regarding to ban shopping bags will be presented in the cabinet ahead to impose decision. Meanwhile, All Punjab Shopping Bag Association and dozens of laborers have staged sit-in on Mall Road in Lahore against the government’s decision to ban plastic shopping bags. The citizens are facing troubles due to the disturbance in traffic due to the protests. The protesters, working in different shopping bags manufacturing companies, said that this step of government will take employment from several people. The workers also advised the authorities to devise proper law instead of banning shopping bags. They further said that there is not even a single country that has complete ban on the use of plastic bags. On the other hand, a complete ban on plastic bags has been enforced across the Sindh. The local government has stated that a case will be registered against those using shopping bags after which, proper investigation will be held. A day earlier, Sindh province has banned single-used plastic bags, announced the Chief Minister's Adviser on Information Senator Murtaza Wahab. In a notification, dated September 27, the provincial government invoked the Sindh Prohibition of Non-degradable Plastic Products and the Sindh Environment Protection Act 2014. The provincial government “is pleased to impose complete ban on the manufacturing, sales, purchase and use of non-degradable shopping bags of all sizes,” read the notification tweeted by the Senator. The ban goes into effect from October 1 (today). The government further directed the use instead of oxo-biodegradable plastic, which is known to degrade in the open environment, and is seen as an environment-friendly replacement of single-use plastic packaging.
