Govt, opposition defer ECP members’ appointment for a week
December 4, 2019
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The government and the opposition have decided to defer the appointment of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for a week. During a meeting, both sides agreed that the CEC and the ECP members would be appointed at the same time. Under the one-each formula, the government has suggested the name of Mir Naveed Jan Baloch for the appointment of a member from Balochistan. However, the deadlock over the appointment of the opposition’s member from Sindh could not end. The Election Commission of Pakistan is likely to become dysfunctional due to a delay in the appointment in the chief election commission (CEC) and members. On the other hand, the opposition has moved the Supreme Court for a delay in the appointment of the chief election commissioner. Earlier, Fawad Ch has said that it will be bad luck if the opposition moves the Supreme Court for the appointment of the members of the Election Commission of Pakistan. In a tweet on Wednesday, he said that the politicians are so much immature that they cannot reach consensus on a person, then how will they evolve consensus on big problems of the country. He urged all parties to show lenience in their position and decide on the matter. Talking to the media after inaugurating Microsoft Imagine Cup 2020 on December 2, Fawad Chaudhry had said that student unions cannot be banned at any cost. He said that he fully supports the student unions. “It is right of the students to raise the voice against the ban,” he said. He said that the government should quash all the cases registered against students. “In the past, political parties used the student unions.” The minister said that student unions should work in an environment free of violence.
