Gujranwala train tragedy death toll rises to 19; railway report terms engine fault as cause of tragedy

GUJRANWALA (92 News) – The body of another missing armyman was recovered from the canal, raising the death toll to 19 in the Gujranwala train tragedy. He was identified as Subedar Usman. The rescue operation has been finalized. The goods bogies have been removed from the canal. Meanwhile, a seven-member team comprising of the officials of the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Railways has been formed to probe into the train tragedy. Federal Government Inspector will head the investigation team. In the preliminary report, the Railway Department said that the accident was the result of engine fault, not worn-out bridge. It said that the engine slipped into the canal after the breakage of the gear box or traction motor. Meanwhile, all the martyrs of the tragedy were buried in their ancestral areas on Friday.
