Hafeez Pasha refuses to take charge as Monetary Policy Committee member

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Renowned economist Dr Hafeez Pasha has refused to take the charge as member of the Monetary Policy Committee. On January 31, the federal cabinet had approved the appointment of Dr Hafeez Pasha as Monetary Policy Committee member. His appointment was declared very important for improving the economy. He has refused to assume the charge due to his reservations about the Monetary Policy Committee. The three-year service tenure of Dr Aliya, a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, had expired on March 21. Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry has recommended the appointment of two other members in place of Dr Aliya and Dr Hafeez Pasha. Dr Pasha served till 2007 as a United Nations Assistant Secretary General and United Nations Development Program Assistant Administrator and a director of the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific. He also served as the Federal Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, with the status of a federal minister, Education Minister and Commerce Minister in three governments. Earlier, he was the Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Dean and Director of the Institute of Business Administration, and research professor and Director of the Applied Economics Research Centre (AERC). Dr Pasha has an MA from Cambridge University, England, and a PhD from Stanford University, USA.
