LAHORE (92 News) – A paraplegic man on death row has received a last-minute execution reprieve because he could not stand on the gallows for the noose to be placed around his neck. Abdul Basit, 43, who was convicted of murder in 2009, contracted tubercular meningitis in 2010 while in prison which left him paralyzed from the waist down. Basit was due to be hanged on Tuesday, but a court delayed the execution after the human rights organizations raised concerns about how the wheelchair-bound man would mount the scaffold. On the other hand, a death-row prisoner Imran convicted of murder was hanged to death in Kot Lakhpat Central Jail. The death-row prisoner Imran had killed his rival over minor dispute.
