Hanif Abbasi awarded life imprisonment in ephedrine case
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – An anti-narcotics court on Saturday awarded life imprisonment to Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi in ephedrine case.
The verdict was reserved earlier today. During the hearing, Abbasi provided legal use of as much as 363KG ephedrine whereas he failed in submitting the evidence pertaining to legal usage of 137KG ephedrine case in the court.
On the other hand, seven other accused in ephedrine case have been acquitted by the court.
– Disqualified from contesting elections –
After announcement of court’s verdict, Hanif Abbasi has been disqualified from contesting elections. Abbasi had had to contest upcoming polls from Rawalpindi’s NA-60 constituency.
– Shifted to Adiala Jail after conviction –
Police have arrested Hanif Abbasi following much-delayed court’s verdict. Hanif Abbasi has been shifted to Adiala Jail after he was declared convict by anti-narcotics court in ephedrine quota case.
Earlier, Judge Sardar Muhammad Akram pronounced the judgment in which Abbasi was sentenced to life in prison and also imposed a fine of Rs1 million on the PML-N leader.
– Angry PML-N workers break window of court –
Pakistan Muslim league-Nawaz (PML-N) workers became anger over the verdict and broke the window panes of anti-narcotics court building. The workers also chanted slogans against the judicial officials and destroyed court property.
Earlier announcement of verdict, the anti-narcotics court reserved verdict today noon and announced.
During the proceedings, Abbasi's lawyer argued all the data of bank transactions were available which were purchased. The lawyer said that the Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) provided incomplete data. He presented the sale records and bank transactions of all the records to the court.
Before announcing the verdict, the security of court had been tighten. The ANF forces double cabin vehicles brought and police surrounded the court with rubber bullet guns. The PML-N workers were also present in the area of court.
On Friday, Lahore High Court’s (LHC) Rawalpindi bench dismissed Abbasi’s dismissed his appeal seeking review of its decision to conduct daily hearings in the ephedrine case. The bench upheld the previous verdict which also directed an anti-narcotics court to conclude trial against him by July 21 (today).
On Tuesday, Abbasi went to the high court, filing the appeal after the Supreme Court rejected his petition in this regard and directed him to file an appeal in the high court seeking review of the verdict. Headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, a bench of the top court dismissed his petition.
