Heavy rains kill six in Gujranwala; Nala Lai start rising
RAWALPINDI/GUJRANWALA (92 News) – At least six persons were killed and several others injured in rain-related incidents in parts of Punjab on Wednesday.
Intermittent rains lashed different parts of the country including Islamabad, Upper Punjab, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir.
In Gujranwala, at least six people including women and children were killed in separate incidents of roofs collapse in Awan Chowk and Arif Town due to heavy rainfall.
In first incident, the roof of a house caved in Awan Chowk, killing three persons including two women on the spot.
In second incident, a woman and her two children were killed when the roof of their house collapsed in Arif Town.
The rains have made weather pleasant but have caused problems like power breakdowns and inundation of low lying areas.
Meanwhile, heavy downpours have inundated roads and low lying areas in Rawalpindi. The current monsoon spell will continue till Sunday.
The water level of Nala Lai started to surge. The Nala Lai water level rose to five feet at Gawal Mandi and nine feet at Katarian. Heavy machinery has been alerted to cope with the emergency situation.
In Lahore, rains, patches of clouds and strong winds provided much needed respite to the people from prevailing muggy weather by causing considerable decrease in the mercury level during the day and at nighttime.
On the other hand, rain-thunderstorm with isolated heavy falls is expected at a number of places in upper Punjab, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad divisions, FATA, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir during next 12 hours.
Rain thunderstorm with isolated heavy falls is also likely at scattered places in southern Punjab, DG Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, Zhob, Kalat divisions and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Light rain drizzle is likely at a few places along Sindh coast.
Meanwhile, Federal Flood Commission has issued advisory of heavy downpours.
According to flood commission, heavy rains are expected in all four provinces until July 16, while heavy rains with gusty winds are also expected in Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore and Faisalabad Division.
