IHC adjourns indictment of Rana Shamim, others till Jan 20 in contempt of court case

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday adjourned the indictment of Gilgit Baltistan former chief judge Rana Shamim and others in the contempt of court case.

A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Athar Minallah head the case.

During the hearing, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah remarked that a party is absent from the proceedings and a new date is fixed for the indictment.

He observed that the court is protector of the rights of the applicant most of all. "The court respects the freedom of expression."

Ansar Abbasi told court that there are some words in the written order that were not uttered by them. "If the affidavit is fake, we write that it was fake," he stated.

PFUJ secretary general Nasir Zaidi requested the court not to indict Ansar Abbasi.

Court Assistant Faisal Siddiqui said that the case to the extent of Rana Shamim is criminal contempt of court, while it cannot be formed against journalists. "There was negligence in the publication of the news."

Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan told court that they had been saying since day one that the role of the media is secondary.

Rana Shamim, Ansar Abbasi and Amir Ghauri were present in court.

However, Mir Shakilur Rehman did not appear in court because he is in quarantine with his family at his home.
