IHC suspends order for cancellation of Hafiz Hamdullah’s citizenship

IHC suspends order for cancellation of Hafiz Hamdullah’s citizenship
October 29, 2019
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday suspended the order for cancellation of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F (JUI-F) leader, ex-minister and former senator Hafiz Hamdullah’s citizenship. The Nadra cancelled Hafiz Hamdullah’s citizenship after the directions of the government. Hafiz Hamdallah approached the IHC against the government action. In his petition, the JUI-F leader pleaded with the court that the Nadra’s step should be declared as null and his citizenship to be restored. In the petition, Hafiz Hamdullah also requested to the court that the Interior Ministry should be stopped for taking further action against him till the decision on his petition. IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah heard the case and suspended order for cancellation of Hafiz Hamdullah’s citizenship and adjourned the case for two weeks while sought a reply from the Nadra officials. The court sought a reply from Nadra within two weeks and directed the authority as well as the interior ministry not to take any sort of action against Hamdullah. Earlier, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has declared Hafiz Hamdullah an alien, alleging that he had ‘fraudulently obtained’ his computerised national identity card (CNIC) that has now been cancelled. “He is a confirmed Afghan and had used fraudulent means to get Pakistan’s citizenship,” said a senior. His case had been “under scrutiny for years” though the decision was taken on a confirmation report from “sensitive agencies” that he was an alien, the official added. A notification issued by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), barring TV channels from inviting him to talk shows as a guest, referred to a Nadra letter dated Oct 11. Maulana Hamdullah had been elected as an MPA from Balochistan in the 2002 General Elections on a Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal ticket, and served as Provisional Health Minister from 2002 till 2005. In March 2012 he was elected to the Senate on a general seat as a JUI-F candidate. His tenure ended in March of last year.
