SRINAGAR (92 News) – A complete shutdown is being observed as Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and across the globe are observing Black Day on Tuesday on eve of the Indian Republic Day.

Call for the shutdown has been given by the All Parties Hurriyet Conference chairman Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik, Shabbir Ahmed Shah and other pro-liberation leaders and organizations.

The observance of the strike and the Black Day is aimed at conveying the message to the world that India continues to usurp the right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people. “All shops and business establishments are closed while traffic is off the road.”

Meanwhile, senior pro-liberation leaders were placed under house arrest here on Tuesday so that the Republic Day celebrations were not disrupted.

Police sources said Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Shabir Shah were put under house arrest to prevent them from disrupting the official functions.

The Hurriyet leaders had asked people to observe January 26 as a "black day" to attract international attention to the Kashmir issue.
