Incessant rain, hailstorm destroy crops in Punjab
LAHORE (92 News) – Incessant rain coupled with hailstorm destroyed crops across the province.
Thousands of acres of wheat and maze were destroyed in Multan, Lodhran, Layyah, Taunsa, DG Khan, Khanewal and Rajanpur.
Trees were uprooted due to windstorm in a huge area of mango orchards.
DG Agriculture Anjum Buttar has feared a decrease in production due to the ongoing rains. “The production target may also be affected in Punjab and Sindh,” he said.
He said that crops in Rawalpindi and Faisalabad division could also be affected if the rain did not stop in 24 hours.
The Wheat director said that algae could affect the crop due to incessant rains.
According to statistics available with 92 News, over 100,000 of wheat crop has been destroyed due to hailstorm, while 90% maize crop has been affected. The wheat crop was mostly destroyed in Central and Southern Punjab. Khanewal and Bahwalnagar have been badly affected by the rains.
Due to the rain and windstorm, the wheat crop has laid and it could not be mowed with the harvester.
In Punjab, wheat was grown over an area of 16.1 million acres, while its production target was 25.5 million tons. In Sindh, the production target was fixed at 3,800 tons.
A 15-20 percent decrease is expected in the production target.
