India’s decision to revoke article 370 simply unacceptable: UK MP
August 8, 2019
LONDON (92 News) – UK Member of Parliament (MP) Liam Byrne said on Thursday that the decision by the Indian government to revoke article 370 of the Indian constitution is simply unacceptable. In his video message, the UK MP said this is the special clause that guarantees special status to Indian-held Jammu Kashmir and suspending this clause is unprecedented and dangerous. Liam Byrne said that India has now deployed tens of thousands of troops to what is already one of the world's most militarized zones. He said just as bad, “We have now had the total suspension of landlines, mobile and internet coverage.” The UK parliamentarian said these steps, this action, and this provocation must be reversed at the earliest.
US senator says US to play role in Kashmir issue
Speaking with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi about India’s move to strip special status of Occupied Kashmir, US Senator Lindsey Graham on Thursday said the US government would play its role in helping the two neighbours to find a way to deescalate the crisis. “Just spoke with the Pakistani Foreign Minister about the growing crisis in Kashmir. India’s decision to change the status quo must be addressed before it leads to a further escalation of tensions,” he tweeted. “Hope the Trump Administration will provide assistance to both Pakistan and India to find a way to deescalate the current crisis. The last thing the region and the world needs is further military confrontations between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.” Earlier, the Indian government rushed through a presidential decree to scrap a special status for Indian-held Jammu Kashmir, hours after imposing a major security clampdown in the region. Amit Shah has announced to abrogate Articles 370 and 35A from its constitution, which gives special status and rights to the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The announcement was made by Indian Home Minister Amit Shah while addressing in Rajya Sabha, upper house of Indian parliament. Amit Shah also announced that Jammu and Kashmir would be re-organized geographically.
