ISLAMABAD (92 News) Former United States (US) president Joe Biden rejected the mercy plea of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) was informed on Friday.
Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan of the IHC conducted a hearing of the petition for the release and repatriation of Dr Aafia Siddiqui from a US prison.
Dr Fowzia Siddiqui and her American lawyer, Clive Smith, attended the hearing via a video link, while the petitioner’s lawyer, Imran Shafiq, and the additional attorney general also appeared in the court.
During the hearing, the court was informed that former US president Joe Biden rejected Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s mercy plea and that the US also refused to sign an agreement with Pakistan to release prisoners.
Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan remarked, “The US is showing us our worth. The former US president pardoned his son but did not release our prisoner.”
A report containing details of the foreign visits of the prime minister and the foreign minister was presented in the court.
A reply on questions about the non-participation of the Pakistani ambassador to the US in meetings related to Dr Aafia was also submitted. The foreign ministry submitted a report containing answers to the court’s questions.
The IHC then adjourned the hearing of the case for two weeks.
It is to be noted here that former US president Joe Biden had signed a warrant for the release of several prisoners, including his son convicted in the gun and tax-related crimes, in the last days of his presidency.
However, Joe Biden did not sign the warrant for the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui despite her mercy plea.
