Judiciary should be independent, it cannot be kept above law: Asad Umar

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Minister for Planning Asad Umar said that democracy faces challenges across the world, while democracy has strengthened and improved in Pakistan.

Addressing a ceremony on World Democracy Day on Wednesday, he said that intolerance and extremism was on the rise in the society. "The voters are supporting extremism. The judiciary is independent from the government," he added.

He said that the parliament should not use democracy for their personal interest. "Democracy is hanging on the last nail. In Pakistan, democracy has been in continuity for the last 13 years," he maintained.

The minister said that the judiciary should be independence, but it cannot be kept above the law. "The basic principle of democracy being fulfilled and there is still a room for improvement," he added.

He said that it cannot be stated all is well and the danger is over.
