Karachi faceoff: Police clash with nurses, baton-charge protesters

KARACHI (92 News) – Police on Thursday baton-charged the protesting nurses, who were gathered under the platform of the Sindh Nurses Alliance, in Karachi to put their demands. Women protesters were attempting to reach the Chief Minister’s House from the Karachi Press Club when they were forced to face water cannons and baton-charging by police. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) MPAs also joined the protesting nurses. The violent showdown left traffic in chaos as officials diverted traffic from Shaheen Complex to M R Kiyanai and Sultanabvad. Police reportedly took several protesters into custody. The negotiations are underway between police and leaders of the protest. Nurses have been demanding an increase in salaries, promotions and hike in nursing student stipend for over two weeks. They have already boycotted emergency services, intensive care units, pediatric intensive care units, pediatric emergencies, cardiac intensive care units and other services at the hospitals across the province.
