ISLAMABAD (92 News) - After three days of efforts, the Karakoram Highway has been opened for all kinds of traffic, announced the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement.

The ISPR said that the Karakoram Highway reopened for traffic after three days Thursday evening. "FWO teams worked for 24 hours to clear the highway despite bad weather conditions and difficult terrain," it added.

“Despite bad weather and difficult conditions, FWO teams worked day and night to open the road for traffic,” said the ISPR.

The road was blocked after landslides occurred at different points. According to ISPR, the highway had been blocked at 20 points on the route from Tata Pani to Raikot.

Earlier, Gilgit-Baltistan received heavy rainfall from July 20 onwards, which led to landslides and flooding. Tourists stuck on the highway were instructed to wait in Chilas till the road was cleared.

A large number of tourists and locals had been stranded due to the closure of the Karakoram Highway following landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Heavy machinery was installed on both sides of the Karakoram to clear the highway, but there were difficulties in rehabilitation work due to landslides.

The GB Home Department had said work on opening the blocked portions of the Karakoram Highway started early Thursday morning. Tourists were told to wait in Chilas till the roads reopened.
