KARACHI (92 News) The fire at Karachi’s Korangi Creek, which was extinguished earlier in the morning, has been reignited by experts to prevent the spread of toxic gases in the area.
The fire began burning on March 29 after a bore-drilling operation hit a gas pocket at 1,200 feet, and it burned for 17 days.
Although the fire was initially put out, toxic gas emissions continued, posing a threat to people’s health.
Experts from Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), along with fire officers, determined that the fire had helped contain the spread of harmful gases.
When it was extinguished due to low gas pressure, there was a renewed risk of gas dispersal, prompting authorities to reignite the fire to burn off the gases.
It should also be noted here that the chemical tests of nearby water have revealed hazardous pollutants, sparking calls for a comprehensive environmental response.
Authorities are exploring methods to permanently seal the leak while ensuring resident safety.
