Lankans fall for 133 as Duminy claims first World Cup hat-trick
March 18, 2015
SYDNEY - Sri Lanka crashed for a low total of 133 runs against South Africa in the first quarter final of World Cup 2015 on Wednesday, as JP Duminy registered the first hat-trick of this year's World Cup. Sri Lankan players could not hold their ground against the Proteas' spin attack as Imran Tahir and JP Duminy shared a total of seven wickets. The off-spinner (Duminy) dismissed Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews with the final ball of his eighth over and returned to send back Nuwan Kulasekara and Tharindu Kaushal with the first two deliveries of his next to become the first South African to register a World Cup hat-trick. Earlier, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and decided to bat first at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Even after the cloud cover cleared to leave a warm and sunny day at the SCG, rain interrupted the play towards the end of the Sri Lankan innings. It was inevitable that whoever won the toss would opt to try and put runs on the board. Both sides have relied on strong batting to get to the knockout stages and both lost two pool games when batting second. "It's a big quarter-final and we want to put the runs on the board," Mathews said. The winner of the match will head to Auckland for the semi-final against the winner of the fourth quarter-final between New Zealand and West Indies.
