Lawmakers stress need to review foreign policy, take allies into confidence

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Leaders of different political parties and Members National Assembly (MNAs) have on Wednesday strongly denounced the statement made by US President Donald Trump and said that the whole nation is on one page against the US new policy. Speaking in the Lower House of the Parliament on a motion moved by Law Minister Zahid Hamid regarding the US President’s new strategy for South-Asia and Afghanistan and remarks about Pakistan, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed said that a partnership has been built between US, India and Afghanistan. He said that the government should open backdoor diplomacy with the US. The AML chief also lashed out at the letter of former Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit’s to now Pakistan’s Ambassador to US Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, terming it an embarrassment for the country. On the occasion, former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar said that sometimes they sold the country for dollar and sometimes for the power, adding that we have ruined our own selves. He said that Pakistan has been blamed even when a firecracker explodes in the region. Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the whole country has rejected the statement of the US President Donald Trump, adding that Minister of Foreign Affairs Khajawa Asif’s decision to visit China, Russia and Turkey is the right decision. We have suffered most in the war on terror, he added. The PTI leader said that Pakistan does not want to fight America but also will not bow down to it. PTI leader Shireen Mazari while criticizing the West said that the US and Europe themselves are providing safe havens to terrorists. Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said that a joint session of the Parliament should be summoned after Eidul Azha to formulate a joint strategy over the threats of the US President. He said that instead of taking an emotional position, we will have to formulate a new policy by keeping in view the current situation. The political leaders said that the whole nation and all the political parties are united to safeguard the nation's interests, adding that Pakistan is a strong and courageous nation and Pakistanis know well how to defend their motherland. They said the foreign policy should be reviewed keeping in view national interests and the changing geo-political situation. The members of the National Assembly said that Pakistan is not responsible for US failure in Afghanistan. They said that US strategies of use of power and dialogue have failed in Afghanistan. The members categorically rejected US President's blame of safe heavens of terrorists in Pakistan.
