LB elections: Punjab government forms transition committees at province, division & district levels

Report by Babar Dogar, Bureau Chief, Lahore LAHORE (92 News) – After the results of the local bodies elections in cantonment boards, the Punjab government has formed transition committees at the province, division and district levels for the new local bodies elections and an end to the Musharraf-era local government system in the province. These committees will chalk out a strategy to replace the 2002 local bodies system with the 2014 local bodies system. The committees will be headed by the additional chief secretary at the province, commissioners at division and DCOs at district level. The committees will approve the implementation of the 2014 local bodies system besides giving a date for ending the Punjab Local Government Ordinance 2001. These committees will also introduce a procedure for transferring the assets and dues of former governments to would-be district governments. In addition, the committees will form the method with regard to the induction of the employees of present district governments’ health and education departments in new authorities. These committees will decide the lump sum payment of the grant to the district governments in 2015 and 16. The committees will also monitor the implementation of interim finance commission for new local governments and authorities. The transition committees will decide the formation of new authorities for health and education at the district level. LB FINAL
