LAHORE (92 News) – The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday granted bail to Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) quid and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on medical grounds in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case.

National Accountability Bureau did not object to the bail plea filed by the brother of former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif during proceedings today. Former Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif had filed the application for bail on medical grounds yesterday. The decision to grant bail was announced by a two-member bench headed by Justice Ali Baqir. The prosecution and defence had concluded their arguments in the case. A two-member bench, headed by Justice Baqar Najafi, had heard the petition. The NAB prosecutor told the court that every life, including that of Nawaz Sharif, is precious, adding that the former premier's condition was treatable.

Today, Dr Ayaz submitted a detailed medical report of Nawaz. He informed the court that a medical board, which also includes Nawaz's personal physician, meets twice everyday to discuss the PML-N supremo's condition. Nawaz's lawyer Ashtar Ausaf told the court today that the former premier's condition was "extremely serious". Dr Ayaz told the court that Nawaz's platelet count was constantly reducing, adding that the hospital had conducted tests to see if Nawaz was suffering from dengue. "We inject platelets every day but they destruct every day," Dr Ayaz said and added: "Something or the other is destroying Nawaz Sharif's platelets." He said that steroids will have to be injected in order to treat Nawaz.

Earlier in the day, while hearing the bail petition of Nawaz Sharif, the LHC summoned the medical report of the former premier and adjourns hearing till 12:30pm today. A division bench of the LHC headed by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi hearing a bail plea filed by Shehbaz Sharif seeking Nawaz Shari’s release on health grounds. The learned judge in the hearing today said the court deems the medical report of the former prime minister as extremely important in the case. The bench called the fresh report of the medical checkup likely to be conducted by the board at 11:30am.

The court adjourned hearing of the case until 12:30 noon today. The bench was informed in yesterday’s hearing by the counsel that the former prime minister was seriously ill and admitted at the Services Hospital due to extremely low platelets count, when it questioned why Nawaz Sharif himself didn’t file the petition. “The doctors are trying but yet to diagnose the reason of the low count of platelets,” the counsel said. “His life is under threat due to the health condition but he could be treated abroad,” the counsel said. The court already issued notices to all respondents including the federal, Punjab interior secretaries and Punjab chief secretary in the bail plea of Nawaz Sharif on medical grounds

Earlier, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has sought a reply from both parties in the plea for the release of former premier Nawaz Sharif on medical grounds. The plea was filed by PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif. The court has also summoned the Services Hospital medical superintendent. The counsel told court that doctors could not diagnose the disease of Nawaz Sharif. He prayed to the court to accept the bail plea. He also requested the court to allow Nawaz Sharif’s treatment abroad if doctors advise so.
