LAHORE (92 News) – A judge of Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Farrukh Irfan has resigned from his office on Tuesday.
According to the reports, Justice Farrukh has sent his resignation for President Arif Alvi and he has also informed the Supreme Judicial Council of his decision.
It is pertinent to mention here that Justice Farrukh Irfan is currently facing a case against him at the Supreme Judicial Council. The Supreme Judicial Council was hearing a misconduct reference against Justice Farrukh after his name surfaced in the Panama Papers list of individuals with offshore companies.
Justice Farrukh Irfan was appointed as a judge of the LHC on 20 February 2010 with his tenure set to conclude on 22 June 2020.
Justice Siddiqui removed on SJC recommendation
Earlier, the
Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) recommended removal of Islamabad High Court (IHC) Judge Shaukat Siddiqui from his office for leveling serious allegations against state institutions including judiciary and the premier state intelligence agency during a speech at the District Bar Association, Rawalpindi.
The recommendation of the top constitutional body, which examines the conduct of judges, has been sent to President Arif Alvi for his approval. The president later approved the recommendations after which Justice Siddiqui has been removed from his post.
This is the first case of removal of a judge by the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) after 1973 when Justice Shaukat Ali of LHC was removed on charges of misconduct. The SJC is the only constitutional authority mandated by Article 209 of the Constitution of Pakistan to conduct inquiries into allegations of incapacity or misconduct against a judge of the Supreme Court or of a high court.
