OTTAWA, Canada (92 News) – Education rights activist Malala Yousafzai has thanked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for getting honorary Canadian citizenship.

In an address to the Canadian Parliament on Wednesday, she said that she as a Pakistani and a Pakhtun accepts the Canadian citizenship with pride.

Malala asked Canada to play a leadership role in promoting education for girls and refugees around the world. "If Canada leads, the world will follow," she said.

Earlier, she accepted a certificate and Canadian flag from the Peace Tower from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before making her address.

Yousafzai made history as the youngest person ever to address Canadian Parliament.

She also becomes only the sixth person to receive honorary Canadian citizenship.
