LAHORE (92 News) – Muslims across the world are observing Yaum-e-Shahadat (the day of martyrdom) of Islam’s second caliph Hazart Umar Farooq (Radi Allahu ta’ala Anhu) today on 1st Moharram. Umar (RA), the son of Al-Khattab, was born in 584- 589 CE. He was one of the most powerful and influential Muslim caliphs in history. He was a sahabi (companion) of the holy prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He succeeded the first caliph of Islam Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radi Allahu ta’ala Anhu). Hazart Umar (RA) belonged to the Adi family of Quraish tribe. In the 8th generation, his lineage joins with holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It was Hazrat Umar under whose rule Islam became an international power and within ten years of his glorious rule, the whole of the Persian Empire, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and a part of Turkey came under the banner of Islam and the nations entered the fold of Islam. Hazart Umar was one of the most just rulers in Islamic History. All the citizens, including the Khalifa himself, were equal before law. The caliph was assassinated on 27th Zilhaj, 644 by a Magian while he was leading the prayer, stabbing him six times in the belly that proved fatal. The great caliph of Islam embraced martyrdom on 1st Moharram.
