Miftah Ismail remanded in NAB custody for 11 days

ISLAMABAD (92 News) – Former finance minister and Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Miftah Ismail was remanded in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) custody in the LNG (liquefied natural gas) import contract case for 11 days on Thursday The NAB produced Miftah Ismail before accountability court and pleaded for 15 days physical remand but the court approved 10 days remand which was extended one day due to the national holiday. Miftah was handed into NAB for 11 days physical remand. The accountability court ordered the corruption watchdog body to present the PML-N leader again on August 19. During the hearing, Miftah’s counsel argued that the arrests warrants for Mifftah were issued on behalf of political revenge. Meanwhile, the tongue of NAB prosecutor was slipped and he pleaded 15 years physical remand of Miftah instead of 15 days. On the other hand, the court also approved physical remand of Shaikh Imranul Haq for 11 days. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0daAketttg A day earlier, the NAB arrested former finance adviser Miftah Ismail after the Islamabad High Court rejected his bail plea in the LNG case. Miftah Ismail had approached the IHC for pre-arrest bail. His plea was heard by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Athar Minallah and Mohsin Akhtar Kayani. The court rejected his bail and ordered to arrest the PML-N leader. He was taken into custody from outside the IHC. On the other hand, Shaikh Imranul Haq al has been arrested after the iHC cancelled the bail in LNG case. Earlier, the IHC bench extended interim bail of former finance minister in LNG quota case till August 7. IHC bench comprises of Acting Chief Justice Justice Aamir Farooque and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb heard the case. Expressing annoyance, the court directed Miftah to submit further documents in connection with the case. Earlier on July 25, Islamabad High Court (IHC) had granted interim bail to former finance minister Miftah Ismail till August 1st. A division bench of the high court had also granted interim bail to former Managing Director Pakistan State Oil (PSO) Shaikh Imranul Haq in the same case. IHC bench comprises of Acting Chief Justice Mr. Justice Aamir Farooque and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb had heard the case. The court had granted bail to Miftah Ismail and Shaikh Imranul Haq on surety bonds of Rs. 0.5 million each. National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Javed Iqbal had last Thursday signed arrest warrants of Miftah Ismail in LNG scandal.
LNG Scandal
In June 2018, NAB had approved inquiry against Khaqan Abbasi, who was ex-minister for petroleum and natural resources at that time, in granting contract of LNG terminal for 15 years to their ‘favourite’ company. It was also observed that this contract had allegedly caused a loss of billions of rupees to the national exchequer. The NAB in January interrogated former finance minister Miftah Ismail in the same case.
