Military courts cease operations

RAWALPINDI (92 News) – The military courts have on Sunday ceased to function on expiry of mandated period. In a statement issued by the ISPR, the courts were established through constitutional amendment in the environment of heightened terrorism. During the period of its validity, the military courts tried some 275 cases in last two years, in which 161 militants were handed down death penalties, while over 113 were given varying jail terms. Only 12 out of total 161 death row prisoners were executed during this period, while others’ appeals against their convictions are pending in the supreme and high courts. It said that cases were dealt through due process of law in Military Courts. The disposal through military courts yielded positive effects towards reduction in terrorist's activities.
