BANGKOK (Web Desk) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, held their first face-to-face meeting at the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok on Friday since the ouster of former Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina last year.
Relations between the two countries have been strained since Hasina fled to India to get asylum after widespread protests against her government.
During the meeting, Yunus raised several issues, including the Teesta Water Treaty, Hasina’s asylum in India, and recent border clashes.
Despite tensions over India’s decision to grant Hasina asylum and violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, the meeting is seen as a step towards stabilising bilateral ties.
Yunus also presented Modi with a framed photograph from 2015 when the Indian prime minister awarded him a gold medal.
The two leaders' talks come amidst a broader context of political and diplomatic challenges in the region.
